Tim Kim
The coffee farming venture started off with very humble initial stages in 1980. To begin with,15 hectares of coffee orchards were planted. As time passed, we realised that growing green coffee to be supplied to local merchants was not going to be a money-wise option. So in 1984 a roaster and other tools were built by Tim, and the farming process was streamlined. From then on we developed a unique roasting technique, and the farm began producing its own roasts under the Sabie Valley Coffee brand.
From the late 1990’s the world coffee prices began to decline to record low levels, and this in effect ended the South African coffee industry with almost all of the coffee producers electing to remove their coffee and plant alternative crops. For Sabie Valley Coffee to succeed in this situation, we had to restructure again. Due to the geography and soil types on Riverbend Farm, we decided to keep the coffee farm, and to diversify this by doing farm tours and becoming involved with tourism.
Today Sabie Valley Coffee is sold to many niche markets, such as the Lowveld Spar group, private game lodges, restaurants, coffee shops and up market road stalls. Our most flourishing development to date, has been to supply coffee nationwide by posting it directly to our customers.
